He was educated at the Canton academy of New Jersey; in 1863 he graduated from Hobart college; in 1866 from the General theological seminary; and received the degrees of In A.M. and S.T.D. 1866 he was ordained deacon; and in 1867 M'as ordained priest. In 1866-72 he was rector of Grace church at Carthage, N.Y.; and in 1872-80 was rector of Trinity church at Watertown, N.Y. Since 1880 he has been protestant episcopal bishop of Montana at Helena. Brewer, Mark Spencer, lawyer, diplomat, congressman, was born Oct. 22, 1837, in Addison, Mich. Since 1864 he has practiced law in Pontiac, Mich; and has been city attorney; and was state senator in 1873-74. In 1877-81 and 1887-91 he was a representative from Michigan to the forty-fifth, forty-sixth, fiftieth and fifty-first congresses as a republican; declining a renomination. In 1881-85 he was United States consul general to Berlin. In 1896 he was a delegate at large to the republican national convention; and in 1898-1901 United States civil service comop,

France and Germany. In 1858-60 he was a professor of chemistry and geology in the college of Washington, Pa. In 1860-64 he was first assistant of the geological survey of California ; and the latter year was also a professor of chemistry in the university of California. Since 1892 he has been president of the Connecticut board of health. He has served on important government commissions, such as the topographical survey of Connecticut, the cereal production in the United States, United States forestry commission, scientific survey of the Philippine Islands, and various other commissions. He is the author of Botany of California; and other works.

Brewer, Willis, soldier, journalist, state senator, congressman, author, was born in Alabama. At the age of eighteen years he entered the military service of the confederate states. He has been a successful journalist, lawyer and planter; and in 1871 was treasurer of Lowndes county, Ala. In 187680 he was state auditor of Alabama. In 1880-82 he was a representative in the Alabama state legislature; was a member of the state senate in 1882-90; was again a member of the state legislature in 1890-94; and was again a member of the state senate in 1894-97, when he resigned. In 1892 he was an elector at large on the democratic ticket. In 1897-1901 he was a representative from Alabama to the fifty-fifth and fiftysixth congresses as a democrat.

Brewster, Benjamin Harris, lawyer, jurist, was born Oct. 13, 1816, in Salem county, N.J. He was appointed to adjudicate the claims of the Cherokee Indians against the United

States and in 1867 was appointed attorneygemeral of Pennsylvania. In 1881-85 he was attorney-general of the United States. He died April 4, 1888, in Philadelphia, Pa.
