Concord, N.H. In 1873-77 he was second lieutenant in the second regiment United States infantry. In 1899-1903 he was mayor of Trenton, N.J. In 1907 he was elected United States senator for the term of 190713.
Briggs, George, business man, legislator, congressman, was born in 1805, in Fulton county, N.Y. In 1849-53 and 1859-61 he was a representative from New York to the thirty-first, thirty-second
and thirty-sixth
congresses. He died June 1, 1869, in Saratoga, N.Y. Briggs, George Nixon, lawyer, jurist, governor, congressman, was born April 13, 1796, in Adams, Mass. In 1831-43 he was a representative from Massachusetts to the twenty-second to the twenty-seventh congresses. In 1844-51 he was the eighteenth governor of Massachusetts. He was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1853; in 1853-59 was judge of the court of common pleas; and was a trustee of Williams college for sixteen years. He was a noted advocate of the temperance cause. He died Sept. 13, 1861, in Pittsfield, Mass. Briggs, Henry Shaw, soldier, lawyer, was born Aug. 1, 1834. At the beginning of the civil war he joined the union army as a colonel in the tenth regiment Massachusetts volunteers; and distinguished himself at the battle of Fair Oaks, where he was wounded. In 1863 he was made a brigadier-general. He died Sept. 23, 1887. Briggs, James F., lawyer, state senator, congressman, was born Oct. 33, 1827, in England. He was a representative in the state legislature in 1856-58 and in 1874. In 1871 he removed to Manchester, N.H. ; and was it state senator in 1876. In 1877-83 he was a representative from New Hampshire to the forty-fifth, forty-sixth and fortyseventh congresses as a republican. delivery letter system, he received the appointment of superintendent of the system throughout the country. He organized it In 1838 he patented a in fifty-two cities. stitching- machine; and claimed that he was the first to use a grooved-eye pointed needle that made a lock-stitch. He died Feb. 33, 1873, in Cleveland, Ohio.
Briggs, Le Baron Russell, educator, college president, was born Dec. 11, 1855, in Salem, Mass. In 1891-1902 he was dean of Harvard college; in 1890 was professor of English and in 1903 professor of rhetoric and oratory in Harvard college. Since 1903 he has been president of Kadcliffe college. Briggs, Lyman J., physicist, scientist, was born May 7, 1874, in Assyria, Mich. Since 1905 he has been physicist in charge of the the government physicial laboratory in bureau of plant industry. He is a fellow of the American association for the advancement of science. Briggs, Robert, journalist, civil engineer, 18, 1822, in Boston, Mass. In the construction of gas holders he introduced the flat top holder without interior trussing; and built the first structure of this type for the city of Lewiston, Maine. He died July 34, 1883, in Dedham, Mass.

ealogist, was born April 13, 1841, in York City. He attended the university of York; and in

1865 came to Cleveland in the service of the Atlantic and greatwestern railroad. In 1862 he became associated with the Greatwestern dispatch ; in 1882 became superintendent of the Valley railroad; and in 1884 became general manager and receiver of the Connotton valley road.
In 1898 he became secretary and of the Cleveland transfer company; and subsequently organized what is now the Hub transfer company. He was one of the most prominent masons and shriners in the United States; originated the Al Koran temple in Cleveland; and was its potentate for more than a quarter of a century. He was the author of The Archives of the Briggs Family. He died Dec. treasurer

Briggs, Thomas Pearl, clergyman, author, poet, was born March 31, 1836, in Richland,
Mich. He was a clergyman of Eastford, Conn.; and for many years editor of a Boston publication. He is the author of Revelation, a paraphrase and exposition in verse and Song of Songs, a paraphrase of Solomon's song in verse.
