He was a volunteer in the Florida of 1836-37. In 1842-44 lie was a representative in the Tennessee state legislature, and in 1844 was a presidential elector. In 1847-49 he was the eleventh governor of Tenn.

Brown, Nicholas, donor, philanthropist, was born April 4, 1769, in Providence, R.I. In honor of Nicholas Brown and in recognition of his gifts, amounting nearly to one hundred thousand dollars, Rhode Island college changed its name to Brown university. He afterward gave two buildings to the university.

Brown, Norris, lawyer. United States senwas born May 2, 1863, in Maquoketa, Iowa. In 1883 he began the practice of law; and in 1907 was elected United States senator from Nebraska for the term of 1907-13. Brown, Obadiah, merchant, philanthropist, was born July 15, 1771, in Providence, R.I. His benefactions were extended to worthy enterprises in all Christian bodies. His principal donations were the Friends boardingschool, founded by his father, to which he left one hundred thousand dollars by his will to form a permanent charitable fund.

Brown, Obadiah Buren, educator musician, composer, was born July 2, 1829, in Washington, D.C. He was a teacher of music in the state normal schools at Salem, Bridgewater, and at Framingham, Mass. He was an organist in Boston and Maiden, Mass. He is the author of several popular collecttions of school songs.
Brown, Oren Britt, lawyer, jurist, was born June 22, 1853, in Orleans county, N.Y. He received his education at the Denison university of Granville, Ohio; and at the Princeton college of New Jersey. Since 1878 he has been engaged in the practice of law and is one of the foremost lawyers of Ohio at Dayton, where he is a judge of the common pleas court for the second Ohio district. Brown, Orville Harry, physician, pharinacologist, scientist, was born July 18, 1875, in Sabetha, Kan. He graduated with the degree of A.B. from the university of Kansas studied medicine and science at the university of Chicago and at the university of St. Louis; and has received the degrees of M.D. and Ph.D. He is physician-in-chief of the Missouri state sanitarium for incipient tuberculosis; and was associate medicinal director of the Mount Rose hospital for consumptives. Lockwood, soldier, was born in Ohio. In 1861 he was captain and assistant quartermaster of volunteers; in 1864 was colonel and quartermaster assigned; and in 1865 was brevetted brigadier-general of volunteers.
