In 1878 he graduated from Indiana university; in 1893 graduated from Harvard university with the degree of M.A. ; and in 1900 reeived the degree of LL.D.

college. In 1878-82 he was superintendent of public schools for Grayville, 111. In 1881-93 he was president of Vincennes university of Vincennes, Ind.; and since 1893 he has been president of the state college of Washington. He is the author of The Mark in Europe and America.

Bryan, George, jurist, state legislator, was born in 1731 .in Dublin, Ireland. He was a member of the Pennsylvania state assembly and in 1765 he was a delegate to the stampact congress, in which he took an active part.

He was

vice-president of the supreme executive council of Pennsylvania from the period of the declaration of independence; and in 1778 was advanced to the presidency. In 1779 he was elected to the legislature. He was an associate justice of the state supreme court in 1780-91. He died Jan. 27, 1791, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Bryan, George S., lawyer, jurist, was bom Jlay 23, 1809, in Philadelphia, Pa. He was ail eminent lawyer of Charleston, S.C.; and

South Carolina, which position he resigned in 1886. He died Sept. 28, district court for

1805 in Charleston, S.G.

Bryan, Guy M., soldier, state senator, congressman, was bom June 12, 1821, in Missouri. He bore a part in the military campaign of Texas in 1836. In 1847 he was elected to the Texas legislature; and served in the house and state senate for seven years. In 1857-59 he was a representative from Texas to the thirty-fifth congress. Bryon, Henry H., congressman, was born county, ^.C. In 1819-23 he was a representative to the sixteenth and seventeenth congresses. He died in May, 1835, in Montgomery county, Tenn. in JEartin

Bryan, Henry Ravenscroft, lawyer, jurist, was born March 8, 1836, in New Bern, N.C. In 1859 he began the practice of law; and was mayor of New Bern, N.C. He was a presidential elector. In 1890-1907 he was judge of the superior court of North Carolina. He died in North Carolina. Bryan, James M., lawyer, jurist, was born in May, 1803, in Baltimore Md. He was postmaster at Baltimore in 1841-49; was a member of the state constitutional convention of 1850-51; and was commissioner of Maryland to settle matters in dispute between that state and Pennsylvania. In 1855 he was appointed judge of the sixth judicial district of Maryland. He died Aug. 23, 1876, in Baltimore.

Bryan, John H., lawyer, congressman, was born in 1798 in Newbem county, N.C. He served a number of years in the North Carolina state legislature. In 1825-29 he was a representative from North Carolina to the nineteenth and twentieth congresses. He died in North Carolina. Bryan, John Pendleton Kennedy, lawyer, politician, was born on Sept. 10, 1852, in Charleston, S.C. He has served as special counsel for the city of Charleston, S.C. In 1895 he was a delegate to the South Carolina constitutional convention. Bryan, Jonothan, patriot, was born Sept. 13, 1708, in South Carolina. He removed to Georgia in 1752; and was active in the affairs of the colony. In 1754 he was made a member of the first royal council under Governor Reynolds; and was an associate judge of the first general court. He represented the district of Savannah in the provincial congress in 1775; and was a, member of the of safety. Although seventy-two years old, he entered the continental army and fought under Wayne. The county of Bryan, Ga., was named in his honor. He died March 12, 1788, in Georgia. Bryan, Joseph, congressman, was born Aug. 18, 1773, in South Carolina. In 1803-06 'was a representative to the eighth and ninth congresses from Georgia. He died Sept. 5, 1812, in Georgia. Bryan, Joseph H., legislator, congressman. In 1815-19 he was a representative to the fourteenth and fifteenth congresses from North Carolina. He died in North Carolina. Bryan, Mrs. Mary Edwards, journalist, author, poet, was born May 17, 1849, near Tallahassee, Fla. She is a journalist; for nine years was editor of Sunny South of Atlanta, Ga.; and in 1899 was vice-president of the Georgia women's press club. She is the author of the novels Maneh; Wild Work, a story of the reconstruction period in Louisiana The Bayou Bride Kildee Uncle Ned's White Child;' The Girl He Bought; His Legal Wife; Nan Haggard; Ruth, an Outcast; My Own Sin and a volume of poems entitled Poems and Stories in Verse.
