HEREINGSHAW'S LIBRARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY. Bullitt, Henry M., physician, surgeon, lecturer, was born in 1816 in Jefferson county, Ky. He stood high in his profession at Louisville, Ky. He was professor in the St. Louis school of medicine, Mo. ; in the Lexington school of medicine of Kentucky; and finally in the Louisville school of medicine. He died in 1878 in Louisville, Ky. His nephew. Dr. Samuel Willcox Bullitt, is a noted physician and surgeon of Ord, Texas. Bullitt, John C, lawyer, was born Feb. 10, 1824, in Jefferson county, Ky. He was receiver of the Schuylkill bank, and gained reputation by the skillful management and

settlement of its affairs. He was leading counsel for General Fitz. John Porter before the advisory board of ofi&cers at West Point. He is the' owner of the large Bullitt building of Philadelphia, Pa. Bullitt, Joshua Fry, lawyer, jurist, was born Feb. 22, 1821, in Jefferson county, Ky. In 1851-53 he represented the city of Louisville in the Kentucky state legislature; and in 1861 .was elected to the bench of the court of appeals. In 1865 he was chief justice of the supreme court of Kentucky. In 1872 he was appointed one of the commissioners to revise the code of practice; in 1876 was one of the editors of the civil code; and in 1897 was engaged on a new revision of the code. Bullitt, Thomas Walker, soldier, lawyer, founder, was born May 17, 1838, in Oxmoor, Ky. He served in the civil war. Since that time he has practiced law in Louisville, Ky. He organized the Fidelity trust company and the Kentucky title company. Bulloch, Archibald, lawyer, planter, congressman, governor, was born about 1730 in Charleston, S.C. In 1775 he was elected a member of the provincial congress, and became its president; and during the following year he was again called upon to preside over the second provincial congress, and sent as a delegate to the continental congress, meeting at Philadelphia. He was the first republican president of Georgia in 1776-77, holding that office when the state constitution came into existence. He died Feb. 22, 1777, in Savannah, Ga. Bulloch, Archibald S., banker, jurist, was born about 1770. He was collector of the port of Savannah, Ga. was navy agent ; was president of bank; and was one of the justices of the state court in Georgia. He died in Savannah, Ga. Bulloch, James, planter, legislator, jurist, was born in 1701 in Scotland. In 1735 he was special agent to the Cteek Indians; was a member of the South Carolina colonial assembly in 1754; and justice of Christ Church parish of Georgia in 1767. He died in Geor;

artillery. In 1813-15 he was United States senator to fill a vacancy. In 1816-43 he was president of the state bank of Georgia, having been one of the founders of that institution. He died March 6, 1852, in Savannah, Ga. Bulloch, William Gaston, physician, inventor, was born Aug. 4, 1815, in Savannah, Ga. He entered the confederate service as surgeon with the rank of major; and afterward had charge of hospitals. He was president of the Georgia medical society; and for some time professor of surgery in Savannah medical college. He invented a useful maxillary splint for the lower jaw. He died June 33, 1885, in Georgia.

Bullock, Alexander Hamilton, lawyer, state senator, governor, author, was born March 2, 1816, in Royalston, Mass. He was a member of the Massachusetts state legislature from Worcester 1845, 1847, 1848, 1861 and 1862; was state senator in 1849; and was commissioner of insolvency in 1853. He was judge of insolvency in 1856-58; and was mayor of 'Worcester in 1859. He was the twenty-fifth governor of Massachusetts in 1866-70. In 1773 was elected a member of the provincial general assembly of Georgia; in 1775-76 was a member and president of the Georgia provincial congresses; and in 1776-77 was governor of Georgia. He died Feb. 33, 1777, in Savannah, Ga.

Bullock, Mrs. Caroline, educator, founder, author, was born Oct. 27, 1845, in Baltimore, Md. She is the widow of Captain Walter E. Bullock; and the founder of the Wilford Home school for girls, of which she is still principal. She is the author of several educational works.

Bulloch, James R., jurist, was born in Island. He was appointed a judge of the United States court; and in 1862-64 was an associate justice of the supreme court of Rhode Island. He died in Rhode Island. Bulloch, Joseph Gaston Bailey, physician, eenealogist, author, was born about 1850.

Bullock, Charles, educator, college president, author, was born in 1826 in Wilmington, Del. In 1885-1900 he was president of the Philadelphia college of pharmacy. He was the author of Alkaloids of Veratrum Virdie. He died March 31, 1900, in Philadelphia, Pa.
