thereafter gave his attention to steel-plate engraving. He arose to the very head of his profession; and he also brought out steel engravings of Lincoln, Grant, Lee, Jackson, McClellan, of Burnside,

and other celebrities, of which the aggregate sale amounted to sevpral million copies. He also made a specialty of mezzo-tints, and won considerable reputation through this style of work. He died Dec. 2, 1893, in Eidgewood, N.J.

Butts, Annice E. Bradford, educator, was Sept. 33, 1844, in Rome, N.Y. In 187177 she was a teacher in the Dearborn seminary of Chicago, 111. In 1886 she became principal and owner of the Kenwood institute of Chicago, 111. Butts, Charles, geologist, scientist, was born Sept. 18, 1863, in Portville, N.Y. He graduated with the degrees of B.S. and M.S. from Alfred university. Since 1901 he has been assistant geologist in the United States geological survey at Washington, D.C. He has made valuable researches in areal and structural geology. Butts, Edmund Luther, soldier, author, was born Aug. 15, 1868, in Stillwater, Mich. In 1890 he was promoted second lieutenant oi the twenty-first infantry. In 1903-06 he was special instructor of physical training throughout the United btates army. He is the author of Manual of Physical Training for the United States army. Butts, Edward, civil engineer, author, was born Aug. 16, 1853, in Rensselaer county, N.Y. His father, Anson Butts, was a noted civil engineer and Bdward learned surveying in his boyhood.

Butts, Elijah, army surgeon, was born in Connecticut. In 1813-15 he was surgeon in the thirty-seventh regiment United States infantry; and was then honorable discharged. He died Jan. 1, 1831. Butts, Issac, journalist, was born Jan. 11, 1816, in Washington, N.Y. Credit belongs to nira for the origin of this principle of popular sovereignty or squatter sovereignty. He died Nov. 20, 1874, in Rochester, N.Y. Butts, Mrs. Mary Frances Barber, author, poet, was born in 1836, in Rhode Island. She is the author of Three Girls; Lottie; Nellie's New Home; Lizzie and Her Friends; The Frolic Series and Cockle Shells and Silver Bells, a volume of Poems. Buttz, Charles Wilson, soldier, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Nov. 16, 1837, in Stroudsburg, Pa. He entered the union army in 1861 as second lieutenant; and rose to the rank of brevet major. He engaged in the practice of law at Norfolk, Va.; and was a delegate to the republican national convention of 1864. In 1873 he was elected solicitor of the first judicial circuit of South Carolina for the term of four years. In 1875-77 as ytas a representative from Virginia to the forty-fourth congress to fill a vacancy.

Buxton, Haynes L., educator, physician, opthalmologist, was born July 15, 1859, in Londonderry, Vt. In 1884 he received the degree of M.D. from the university of Vermont; and received the honorary degree of LL.D. from the university of Vienna. In 18971903 he was superintendent of public health for Oklahoma territory. He has been professor of ophthalmology at the Epworth college of medicine of Oklahoma City; and has held various public positions in his city and state.

Buxton, Jarvis Barry, clergyman, was born Jan. 17, 1792, in Newbern, N.C. In 1831-57 he was rector at Fayetteville, N.C. A memoir by his son. Rev. Jarvis Buxton, accompanies a volume of his discourses. He died May 30, 1851, in Fayetteville, N.C.
