Calkins, Norman Allison, educator, author, was bom Sept. 9, 1822, in New York City. He was first assistant superintendent of primary schools in New York City for thirtythree years. He was the author of Primary Object Lessons; How to Teach; Manual of Object Teaching; Aids for Object Teaching; Trades and Occupations; and Natural History Series for Children. He died Dec. 22, 1895, in New York City. Calkins, WiUiam H., soldier, lawyer, congressman, was bom Feb. 18, 1842, in Pike county, Ohio. He entered the union army in 1861; and served almost continuously until 1865. He was state's attomey for the ninth judicial circuit in 1866-70; and was a representative in the state legislature in 1871. In 1877-85 he was a representative from Indiana to the forty-fifth, forty-sixth, fortyseventh and forty-eighth congresses as a republican. He died Jan. 29, 1894, in Tacoma,

In 1863-65 he served in the civil war; was the second and first lieutenant in companies G and K, seventy-sixth regiment New York volunteers ; and participated in numerous battles and skirmishes. He is prominently identified with the business and public affairs of Syracuse, N.Y. for three years was deputy sheriff of Onondaga county, N.Y.; was road commissioner for five years; and for two years was a member of the high school commission of Syracuse, N.Y. He is secretary and treasurer of the amalgamated meat cutters and butcher workmen of North America, a labor organization numbering over fifty thousand members, which was founded by himself in 1897. Ky.; and has received the degrees of A.M., M.D. and Ph.D. In 1888-92 he was assistant geologist of the Arkansas geological survey and in 1892-95 was professor of chemistry at the manual training high school of Louisville, Ky. In 1895-97 he was superintendent of schools of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; then of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and in 1899-1904 was curator of the Children's museum of Brooklyn, N.Y. He is the author of The Life and Writings of Rafinesque; and numerous

other works.
