Campbell, John P., congressman, was born Kentucky. He was a member of the state house of representatives from Christian county in 1826. In 1855-57 he was representative from Kentucky to the thirty-fourth congress. He died in Kentucky. Campbell, John'Poage, clergyman, author, was born in 1767 in Virginia. He settled in Kentucky in 1795; and in 1811 was chaplain in the state legislature. He was the author of The Passenger; Strictures on Stone's Letters on the Atonement; Vindex; Letters to the Rev. Mr. Craighead; The Pelagian Defeated; and An Answer to Jones. He died Nov. 4, 1814, in Chillicothe, Ohio. Campbell, John Preston, lawyer, author, poet, was born on April 8, 1847, in Boston, Mass. He was educated at Cornell college of Iowa. He served as a union soldier during the civil war in battery H, first Ehode Island light artillery in

subsequently brevetted sergeant for bravery in battle. He was in the battles of the Wilderness, Spottsylvania, at Petersburgh, Chantilla, and Sailors' Creek. He was in the army of the Potopiac; and was wounded three tinit-s. He is the author of Jlerl of Medavon; My Mate Immortal; The Woman of Chalk; and is also of the following poetical works; Queen Sylvia; The Summerless Sea; Republiea; and The Land of Sun and Song. Campbell, John Tenbrook, soldier, civil engineer, author, was born May 21, 1833, in Montezuma, Ind. During the civil war he agrved as captain of
Trigonometry and Land Surveying; and numerous other scientific works. Campbell, John Tyler, soldier, lawyer, orator, diplomat, author, was born on Sept. 9, 1843, in Bowling Green, Mo. He was educated in schools,
the Indiana senate; and in in
1879-83 was first assistant in the Indiana
bureau
of
statistics.
For ten years he was county surveyor. He has been prominent in good roads movement surveyed fifty miles of level along the Wabash river; built eleven miles as a contractor; and surveyed for construction over two hundred miles of gravel and turnpike roads in Parke county, Ind. He has invented improvements in civil engineering instruments. He is the author of National Financ;

he entered the union
army; and he attained the rank of captain in the thirty-second regiment Missouri volunteer infantry. After the civil war he was elected prosecuting attorney; and in 1870 was corporation at, torney of Kansas City, Mo. Since 1874 he has practiced law in Santa Rosa, Cal.; and has served two sessions in the California state legislature, once as speaker of the house. He was appointed consul of the United States to New Zealand; and again appointed consul to China. He was president of the board of freeholders appointed to frame a charter for Santa Rosa. He stands high in masonic circles. He has traveled extensively in China, Japan and the south seas. He has written and published numerous short stories; and delivered orations and public lectures. Campbell, John W., clergyman, was bom Jan. 7, 1847, in Bath, N.Y. He was educated at the Baldwin university of Ohio; and in 1889 received his doctorate from that in-

Campbell, John Wilson, lawyer, jurist, congressman, was born Feb. 23, 1782, in Augusta county, Va. In 1808 he began the practice of law in West Union, Ohio; and was a member of the state legislature. In 1817-27 he was a representative from Ohio to the fifteenth to the nineteenth congresses. He was United States judge for the district
