Carpenter, Alonzo P., lawyer, jurist. In 1898 he was chief justice of the state supreme court of New Hampshire. Carpenter, Amelia Walstein, author, poet, was born Feb. 23, 1840, in Stephentown, N. Y. She has contributed to Frank Leslie's periodicals ; is a correspondent of the Springfield Republican and editor of the New York Citizen. She also edited the Life, Letters and Poems of Mrs. Fanny Raymond Ritter. Carpenter, Augustus Alvord, merchant, capitalist, was born June 8, 1835, in Franklin county, N.Y. He was educated in the public schools of western New York. In 1849 he went to California by way of the Isthmus engaged for several years with his brother in mining and trading; and in 1855 engaged in the dry goods and lumber business in Monroe county, Wis. In 1860 he engaged in the lumber business in Chicago; is president of the Kurby-Carpenter company; and has been president of several banks. He was president of the Citizen's association of Chicago; has been president of the Union club and filled various positions of honor. In 1874 he was nominated as governor by the prohibition party in Michigan; and in 1876 on the first greenback ticket. He was the author of several works. He died Aug. 19, 1884, in Orion, Mich. In 1879-83 he was a representative from Iowa to the forty-sixth and forty-seventh congresses as a republican. He died May 29, 1898, in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
