He was elected district Fulton attorney of county in 1859, and held that office three years. In 1871-73 he was a representative from New York to the forty-second congress He. as a democrat. also attained promir.irice as one of the foremost lawyers in the state of New York at Johnstown. He died May 8, 1901, in Johnstown, N.Y.

born on March 3, 1832, in Staunton, Va. In 1859 he began the manufacture of granulated smoking tobacco; and soon built up a vast business. He was a member of the city council for thirty-two years; and its president for nearly thirty-two years. He died Feb. 9, 1898, in Lynchburg, Va. Carroll, Mansfield Coniad, teacher and dairyman, was born on March 18, 1857, in
Dauphin county. Pa. He was educated at the Harrisburg city high school; and at the Pennsylvania business college. For eighteen years he taught in the public schools of Dauphin county; and for twelve years was clerk at the Harrisburg foundry and machine works. In 1867 he secured a position in a large Philadelphia mercantile establishment; and was rapidly advanced to general manager. In 1876 he began the manufacture of woolen, worsted and cotton goods; and in 1894 built the large Endurance mills. He was one of the founders of the United life insurance and trust company; is president of the Industrial trust, title and savings company; and was one of the originators of the Philadelphia bourse.
