Carson, Luella Clay, educator, was born March 12, 1856, in Portland, Ore. Her father was a pioneer of the state, and for many years a member of the state senate. Since
Assumption in 1849, and also erected a convent and free schools. He afterward founded a convent and academy of the Sisters of the holy child Jesus at Sharon Hill. He died in
1880 she has been closely identified with the educational work of Oregon; she has been vice-principal in the Couch school of Portland; preceptress of the Pacific university at Forest Grove in 1879-84; professor of rhetoric and elocution in the state university at Eugene in 1888-95; and since 1895 professor of rhetoric and English literature in the
1879, in Philadelphia, Pa. Carter, Charles M., lawyer, author. He is a lawyer of Washington, D.C. He is the author of Political Romance; and other works. Carter, D. M., painter, artist, was born in 1827 in Ireland. He was one of the original members of the Artists' fund society, established in 1859. About 1850 he painted a series of pictures illustrating Goldsmith's Deserted Village. Among his most successful works are Decatur's Attack on Tripoli; and Moll Pitcher at the Battle of Monmouth; and portraits of Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson and James K. Polk.

Carson, Robert Rodgers, reformer, inventor, was born May 3, 1831, in New Hope, Pa. He was given the rank of lieutenant -colonel in the civil war for services rendered in ascertaining and having published the names of the wounded and dead. In 1881 he installed the first electric lights seen in Virginia in his inn at Luray, Va. Carson, Sallie, poet, was born March 12, 1847, in Beaver county, Pa. She is the author of Wayside Flowers, a volume of poems. She died in Beaver Falls, Pa. Carson, Samuel B., congressman, was born at Pleasant Garden, N.C. For several years he was a member of the state legislature. In 1825-33 he was a representative from North Carolina to the nineteenth, twentieth, twenty-first and twenty-second congresses. He killed Doctor Robert B. Vance in a duel in 1827. He died in November, 1840, in Arkansas. Carson, William Henry, lawyer, author, was born Jan. 3, 1859, in New York City. Tito. Carter, Bernard, educator, lawyer, orator, was born June 20, 1834, in Prince George's coimty, Md. He began the practice of law in 1855 in Baltimore, Md. In 1878 he was a professor in the Maryland university. In 1883-89 was city solicitor; and since 1895 has been provost in the university of Maryland. Carter, Charles Daugherty, educator, congressman, was born Aug. 16, 1868, in Choctaw nation, Ind. Ty. He worked on a ranch and clerked in a store until 1892. In 189294 was auditor of public accounts of Chickasaw nation; and in 1894-96 was superintendent of schools in Indian territory. In 1897 he was a member of the Chickasaw council; and in 1900-03 he was mining trustee of Indian territory. In 1906 he proposed the state of Oklahoma; and in 1907-11 he was a representative from Oklahoma to the sixtieth and sixty-first congresses as a demo-

In 1861 he was appointed minister to Bolivia. In 1863 he became chief justice of the supreme court of the District of Columbia. He died April 16, 1887, in Washington, D.C.
