was born April 11, 1839, in Holmes county, Ohio. He was commissioned a surgeon in the union army; and was mustered out of service in 1865. He is a member and president of th>;

and prominent in the American medical association.
Casebeer, James Henry, journalist, statesman, was born Dec. 13, 1859, in Flat Rock, Ohio. He was educated in the public schools of his native state. For many years he has been engaged in journalism; is a noted editor; and director of two insurance companies. He has filled numerous positions in city and township school boards. In 1896-08 he was elected a representative to the Nebraska state legislature; and is the author of the anti-cigarette law, Nebraska mutual insurance law, void marriage law, and the statute establishing the home for crippled and deformed children of the state.
Casement, John Stephen, soldier, was born New York. In 1861 he was a major of the seventh regiment Ohio infantry; and in 1865 he was brevetted brigadier-general of in
volunteers.
Casey, Edward Pearce, designer, architect, was born June 18, 1864, in Portland, Maine; and is the son of Brigadier-General Thomas Lincoln Casey. He was educated at the Emerson institute of Washington, D.C; and grad-
uated from the school of mines of Columbia university; he received the degree of C.E. in 1886 and that of architect in 1888. He studied also in Ecole des beaux arts in Pans. In 1892-97 he was supervising architest of the congressional library building. In 1893 he was one of the six equal prize winners In the New York City hall competition; and in 1900 won the first prize for a design for a bridge over the Potomac river at Washington, D.C; and also won first prize for a design for the Grant monument at Washington, D.C. He is a noted architect of New York City; and a member of the leading architectural and technical associations of

eighth and ninth congresses. He died Feb. 1, 1807, in Washington, D.C. Casey, Lyman Rufus, merchant, manufacturer, United States senator, was born in York, N.Y. For many years he was a merchant and manufacturer of Detroit, Mich. He spent the years from 1872 to 1879 in travel at home and abroad. In 1882 he removed to
North Dakota; and has since been engaged in
the
management
of
the affairs of the
Carrington and Casey land company, whose business includes the cultivation of several
thousand acres of land. He never sought political preferment, but on the organization of Foster county, Dakota territory, he was appointed commissioner by the governor and on the admission to the union of North Dakota in 1889, he was elected United States senator.
Casey, Samuel, financier, was born in Kentucky. While residing in Washington City he was appointed treasurer of the United States in 1853; and held the office until 1860.
Casey, Samuel L., congressman, was born Union county, Ky. In 1861-63 he was_ a representative from Kentucky to the thirty-seventh congress. Casey, Silas, soldier, author, was born July 12, 1807, in East Greenwich, E,.I. In 1826 he graduated from the United States military academy; and served in the Seminole war in 1837-42; distinguished himself in the war with Mexico; in
and was made brigadier-general of volunteers in 1861. He sub-
sequently attained the rank of major-general of the United States army; retired in 1868; and twice received the thanks of the Rhode Island legislature for distinguished services in the civil war. He was the author of Infantry Tactics; and Infantry Tactics for Colored Troops. He died Jan. 22, 1882, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Casey, Silas, naval officer, was born Sept.

He was attached to the steamed Wissahickthe batteries in Charleston harbor. He was equipment officer at the Washington navyyard in 1882-84; was light-house inspector in 1885; and in 1886 commanded the receiving-ship Dale. He was made a captain in 1889; promoted to commodore in 1898; and subsequently he became rear-admiral, com manding the Pacific station.
