He was a member of the secession convention of Mississippi in 18G1; was promoted brigadier-general in 1862; and was transferred to the cavalry service in 1863. He was a member of the state senate of Mississippi in 1876-77; and in 1877-83 he was a representative to the forty-fifth, forty-sixth and forty-seventh congresses as a democrat He died April 9, 1898. Chalmers, Joseph W., lawyer. United States senator, was bom in 1807, in Halifax county, Va. In 1840 he moved to Holly Springs, Miss.; and in 1842-43 was vice-chancellor. In 1846-47 he was United States senator from Mississippi to fill a vacancy; but declining a re-election, was succeeded by Jefferson Davis. He died in June, 1853, in Holly Springs, Miss. Chalmers, Lionel, physician, author, was bom in 1715 in Scotland. He was a noted physician of Charleston; and the author of Treatise on the Weather and Diseases of South Carolina; and Essay on Fevers. He died in 1777 in Charleston, S.C. was born Dec. 7, 1837, in Colebrook, Conn. He was educated at Williston seminary of Easthampton, Mass.; and received the degre of LL.D. from Wesleyan university. Since 1863 he has been a successful banker; and is president of the Home national bank of Meriden, Conn. He has always been prominently identified with the business and public affairs England; and in 1904-05 served as of governor of the. state of Connecticut.

Chamberlain, George Earle, lawyer, legislagovernor, was bom Jan. 1, 1854, near Natchez, Miss. In 1876 he graduated from the Washington and Lee universities with the degrees of A.B. and B.L. In 1876 he moved to Oregon; and in 1880 was elected a representative to the Oregon legislature. In 1884-86 he was district attomey; in 1891-94 was attorney-general of Oregon; and in 1900-02 was district attorney for the fourth judicial district of Oregon. In 1903-06 he was governor of Oregon and is now serving his second term of four years ending in 191Q, Chamberlain, Henry, farmer, founder, statesman, was born March 17, 1824, in Pembroke, N.H. In 1849 he was a member of the Michigan state legislature; and in 1850 he founded the village of Three Oaks, Mich. In 1872 he was grand master of masons in Michigan.
