Chandler, John G., soldier, was born Dec. 31, 1830, in Massachusetts. In 1848 he entered the United States military academy; and graduated therefrom in 1853. During the civil war he attained the rank of lieutenantcolonel and quartermaster of the United States volunteers. In 1904 he was retired with the rank of brigadier-general United States army. Chandler, Joseph Ripley, journalist, diplomat, congressman, author, was born Aug. 25, 1792, in Kingston, Mass. In 1849-55 he was a representative from Pennsylvania to the thirty-first, thirtysecond and the thirtythird congresses; and in 1858 was appointed minister to Naples. After his return he be-
came active editor of the Philadelphia North American. In 1831 he published a Grammar of the English Language; and subsequently a large number of Essays and Addresses on subjects connected with Social Life and Literature. He died July 10, 1880, in Philadelphia, Pa.

Chandler, John, soldier, congressman, United States senator, was born in 1760, in Maine, when a part of Massachusetts. He was a representative in the state senate in 1803-05; and in 1805-09 he was a representative to the ninth and tenth congresses. In 1812 he was appointed brigadier-general; and took an active, part in the Canadian campaign. In 1819-29 he was United States senator from Maine. In 1829-37 he was collector of the port of Portland. He died Sept.

Boston; and in 184445 was its president. In 1845-47 he served as a member of the Massachusetts state legislature. In 1846-53 he was city solicitor of Boston; and in 1854 was a member of the executive council of Massachusetts. He died in 1889 in Boston, Mass.
Chandler, Ralph, naval officer, was born 23, 1829, in New York. He became captain in 1874; commodore in 1884; and rearadmiral in 1886. He died Feb. 11, 1889, in China.

in 1794 in Massachusetts. After being a member of both branches of the Massachusetts state legislature, he was sheriff of Middlesex, in 1840-55. He was also major-general of the state militia for many years. He died July 30, 1867, in Lexington, Mass.
Chandler, Xhomas, soldier, congressman, was born Aug. 10, 1773, in Bedford, N.H. He was a justice of the quorum in 1808 and a captain of militia in 1815. He was a member of the New Hampshire state legislature in 1827. In 1839-33 he was a representative from New Hampshire to the twenty-first and
twenty-second congresses. His brother, John Chandler, was also in congress; and he was the uncle of Senator Zaehariah Chandler. He died Jan. 28, 1866, in Bedford, N.H. Chandler, Thomas Bradbury, clergyman, missionary, was born April 36, 1726, in Woodstock, Conn. His missionary labors in Elizabethtown and vicinity were unceasing. He died. June 17, 1790, in Elizabethtown N.J.
