States military academy; became first lieutenant is 1899, and attained the rank of captain in 1902. Chillson, William Deal, pioneer lawyer, lecturer, jurist, was born on Nov. 19, 1835, in Ticonderoga, N.Y. In early life he was steam engineer and steam sawmill builder; and in 1850 sawed the first board cut by steam power in Minnesota at St. Paul. He has traveled and lectured on science and the bible; and is the author of a religious work. He twice filled the office of county judge. Chilson, Gardner, manufacturer, inventor, was born in 1804 in Thompson, Conn. He engaged in the manufacture of stoves and furnaces at Mansfield, Mass. As early as 1844 he devised a furnace that received a prize medal at the London world's fair in 1851. Among his numerous inventions are conical radiators, applied to stoves and furnaces. He died Nov. 21, 1877, in Mansfield, Mass. Chilton, Horace, lawyer, United States senator, was born Dec. 29, 1853, in Tyler, Texas. He was a delegate at large from Texas to the national democratic convention at St. Louis in 1888; and served one term as assistant attorney-general of Texaa by appointment. In 1895-1901 he was United States senator.

Chilton, Robert Hall, soldier, was born in 1817 in Loudon county, Va. He entered the military academy in 1833 was second lieutenant of dragoons in 1837; became first lieutenant 1842; and captain first dragoons in 1847. He was brevetted a major for gallant and meritorious service at the battle of Buena Vista. In 1861 he was appointed lieu;

tenant-colonel in the adjutant-general's department of the confederate army; and brigadier-general in 1863. He died Feb. 18, 1879, in Columbus, Ga. Chilton, Samuel, lawyer, congressman, was born on Sept. 7, 1804, in Warrenton, Va. In 1843-45 he was a representative from Virginia to the twenty-eighth congress and after retiring from congress was a member of the state constitutional convention. He died Jan. 14, 1867, in Fauquier county, Va. Chilton, Thomas, lawyer, clergyman, congressman, was born July 30, 1798, in Garrard county, Ky. He was a member of the Kentucky state legislature for several sessions. In 1827-31 and 1833-35 he was a representative from Kentucky to the twentieth, twenty-first and twenty-third congresses. While practicing law with success he became a baptist preacher; moved to Alabama; and was elected president of the Alabama baptist state convention. He died Aug. 15, 1854, in Montgomery, Texas. Chilton, William P., jurist, lawyer, statesman, was born in Kentucky. He was at different times a member of each house of the
