In 1891 he celebrated his one hundredth birthday near Flemington, N.J.; where he died a few years later. Allen, Thomas Hampton, merchant, founder, was born March 8, 1810, in Wilkes county, N.C. He was a successful cotton merchant of Memphis, Tenn.; he aided in the establishment of the first insurance company in Memphis, Tenn.; and was president of the first telegraph company opened in that city. He died in Memphis, Tenn. Allen, Thomas Scott, soldier, was born in New York. In 1861 he was captain in the second regiment Wisconsin infantry ; became lieutenant-colonel in 1862; and colonel of the fifth regiment of the Wisconsin infantry in 1863. He succeeded his father-in-law, Andrew Hamilton, as recorder of Philadelphia in 1741; and in 1750-74 was chief justice of Pennsylvania. Benjamin West was aided by him; and Dr. Franklin was enabled to establish the college of Philadelphia with his co-operation. He was a loyalist; and in 1774 went to England, where he published The American Crisis, setting forth a plan for restoring the dependence of the American colonies. His son Andrew became attorney-general and was afterward a member of congress and of the committee of safety, but deserted the national cause in 1776. William, an-
