The road goes on straight from here by Hagworthingham or turns to the left to Mavis Enderby, and so strikes a parallel route, both of them unite at the top of the hill which runs down by High Toynton into Horncastle. The name Mavis was originally Malbyse, a name more characteristic than complimentary, for it means evil beast. The word byse, or bys, exists in Bison, and the name of the unpleasant one is found again in the village of Acaster Malbis, near York.
