Columbia county has had a number of these mouthpieces and most of them have left an impress upon the history of the county. T h e Bloom sburg Register, published t y Jam es Delcvan, w'as b ^ u n about the first o f Cktober, 1826, as appears by the oldest copy which xvas in the possession o f Hon. Leonard B . Rupert, in 1883, bearing date M ay 10 ,18 2 7 . and being Vol. I, -No. 32. It w as a slicct by 17 inches.
In A pril, 1828, Thomas Painter purchased the paper from the owners and changed the name to the Columbia County Register. He continued the publication until A pril, 1844, when it w as discontinuc<l. The Register was de%’Oted to the |>arty opposed to the Democ racy, and w as rigorously edited by Mr. Painter, T he Columbia Democrat was established by John S . It^ram, and the first number issued A pril 20, 1837. Then, or sliortly after, he was joined by Franklin S. Mills. They conducted the paper fo r one year, and in 1838 sold it to Capt. Henry Webb. H e gave it Mrmancnce, and in March. 1847, sold it to <!«I. L evi L . Tate, who continued it until ] 806 . and in Feb ruary o f that year sold it to E lijah R . Ikclcr. H e consolidated it with the S ta r 0/ T h e North, and called the combination the Democrat and S tar, the name changing subsequently to the lih o m sb u rg Democrat. It w as continued
