There are three financial institutions in Bloomsburg in 19 14, the F irst National Bank, the Farm ers' S a lio n a l Bank and the Bloom s burg National Bank. On Feb. 5, 18O4, a company was formed for the transaction oi a banking business by W il liam M cK clvy, William N eal, 1. W. M cK elvy, Robert Cathcart, Robert F . Clark, John K. Grotz, George Hughes, Lloyd Paxton and Charles K. Paxton. On Feb. 29, 1864, it was authorized to become a national bank, and on March 7th it was formally opened for busi ness with C. K. Paxton as president, and J . P . Tustin a s cashier, its capital was $50,000, and it w as located in a room in the corner of the building that was then the residence o f W il liam M cK clvy. A fte r M r. M cK elvy's death the building was purchased from his estate by Col. S . Knorr and L . S . Wintcrstecn, and subse quently was bought by the First National Bank. In 1906 the building was practically re built and ailarged, 3 third story being added and the entire interior changed, making one of (he most imposing structures in the town. The bank occupies the first floor and is e<|uipped with all the most modem banking fixtures, with banking rooms that will compare favor ably with many in the large cities. It now has a capital o f $100,000, and in June, 19 14, a surplus fund and undivided profits o f $144,862.20. T he present officcrs and board of directors a re : M. 1. Low, president; George L . T he Farm ers' National Bank was organized in Jan uary, 18 9 1, with a capital o f $60,000. and the first board o f directors w ere: W. S. Moyer, C . A . Kleim, W. K ram er, C. M. Creveling, G. A . H erring, V. Ginglcs. C . W. Runyon, J . W. E ves, P. A . Evans. W . S. M oyer was presi dent, and Frank Ikclcr, cashier. It began busi ness in a room in what was then M rs. M . E . En t's building, its quarters being much less than half the size o f its present offices. In 1909 the bank purchased the building and re built it. adding a third story .md changing it throughout. T he bank occupies the entire first floor, elegantly fitted with all the modem con veniences. finished in mahogany and marble, one of the handsomest lianking houses in the State. The Bloomsburg National Bank was organ ized in 1899 and began business on Aug. ist with a capital o f $Co,ooo, which w as increased to $100,000 in 1905. The bank is located in the building o f Paul E . W irt next to Ihe E x change Hotel, occupying the entire first floor, is brautifuUy finisficd, and fitted with every appliance for modern i n k in g . The Bloom sburg Board o f Trade w as o r ganized in 1886. and during its existence w as instrumental in helping to bring to Bloomsburg both the carpet mill and the silk mill. A ft e r a few years o f usefulness the organization ceased. The Bloom sburg Cham ber o f Commerce w as organized in 1907. T he following arc the present officers: President, C. C. It is still an active organization, and has done much to foster and develop the m anufac turing and business interests of the town. T h e Business M en's Association o f Blooms burg was first organized .as the Business M en’s Protective Association in the spring o f 19 10 . A t a meeting o f business men held in the T ow n Hall on M ay 9th o f that year a committee w as appointed to draft a constitution and by-laws. These were adopted on M ay 20th. T he organization prospered until M ay. 1 9 1 1 . when a period o f inactivity set in. which continued until Jan . lO, 19 13 .
