Upon h is promotion Joseph H. Johnson was nwde captain and ser ed in that |x>sition lo the close of the war. On the same day that Captain I'xkm un was made n u jo r he was promote<l lo the i>osition o f lieutenant colonel, and on the 25th o f lanuar)-, 1865, was made colonel, of the «».vl Kegimcnt. Colonel l*ckinan was a brave and gallant officer, l»eIove<l by his men, and sharing wilh them all the trials and vicissitudes o f those storm y years from Sept. 25, 1861. to Ju n e 23, 1865. Tliree times he was .severely wounded, h is injury at Cedar Crcck hcing the most serious and the one which through all his after life gave him great pain and distress and eventually caused his death, M ay 3. 1906.
