CHAPTER IX D A N V IL L E T h e town o f Danville was laid out by Gen. Daniel Montgomery* in 1792. His plan com prised that portion o f (he (own lying cast of M ilF street to Church street and extending from the river to what w as afterwards the canal. His father, Gen. William Montgomery, some ten years later, laid out that portion of the town lying west o f Mill street. T h e name "D anville” was given the town out o f deference to Gen. Daniel Montgomery, and through the ]iartia1ity of his customers, who phiced the most implicit confidence in him and reverenced him as a true friend. The settlement o f Mahoning was the center o f a la ig c trade drawn by Gen. William Mont gom ery’s m ill; Gen. God never stored hills with riches to be left unuse<): and some day, let us hope not fa r distant, a busy brain and a skilled hand will discover the key that wilt unlock these mines of wealth and bring forth ihe riches that have so long lain idle and uncalled for.
