During Kev. Mr. IJm b c rts pastorate in Danville, the church was rcpapered and painted, new car pets were purchased, and the congregation was entirely freed from debt. Kev. Joseph E . Guy began his ministry in November, 1905, a n J reituincd pastor until 1 9 11 . During hts ministr)* the metnbership numbered 365. The present pastor, Rev. J . X . Bauman, be gan his work here in 1 9 11 . During his minis try an addition has been pbccd upon the rear of the church, a pipe organ and electric lights installed, steam heat made to replace the stoves of the ]>ast, hardwood floor laid in the audi torium, four additional stained g b s s windows have been pbced in the church, and the in terior has been frescoed. N ew carpets lu v e been laid in the auditorium and classrooms and a new and handsome altar was presented to the church by Dr. J . Sw eisfort. ,A new reading desk w as purclvised by the Christian Endeavor Society and the pulpit chairs w*ere recovered. The total cost of these improve ments w as over $ioxxx>. every cent o f which was at once paid, though the congregation is com|)osed o f persons in moderate financial circumstances. It is w'orthy o f note that the Ladies’ A id Society of the church paid for the .steam heat and the pipe organ, two considera ble items in the cost of the improvements. The church is a fine brick building, wilh the addition in the rear, and originally cost $20,000. T o (his must be added the value of the additional work. Lutheran congregation was o i^ n iz e d . Those forming this o^anization seceded from the parent congregation dissatisfied with the choice o f location for the new* church. T he church building o f this congregation is located on the com er of F^st Market and Cliurch streets. It w as erected in 1861 at a cost o f $35,000. It is a handsome brick structure o f impressive proportions and w*as originally built with an imposing spire 12 5 feet high. But a severe stomt (hat passed over Danville some time in the sixties demolished this spire and it was never rebuilt. The first pastor of the church w.is Rev. I). M . Henkel. w*ho was succeeded by Kev. M r Comman, Rev. Mr. Anspach and Kcv. M. C. Horine, M r. Horine is remembered in this com munity for hts learning and ability and his fraternal spirit, joining with his ministerial brethren in all things designed for the good o f Zion. W hile pastor o f this church, from (878 to 18 8 1, M r. Horine w*as county superin tendent o f public schools o f Afontour county, the dutic.ft of which office he performed with entire .satisfaction to (he public. Following Mr. Horine the pastors have been: Rev. J . R . G ro ff; Rev. C. K . Drum heller; Rev. W . E . Roney, from 1890 to 19 0 a; Rev. L . D. Ulrich, from 1900 to 1 9 10 : and Rev. J . L . Yonce, who commenced his p as torate in 19 10, and at this writing is still the pastor. In 1893 a fine pipe organ was placed in the church. In 1909 the church building w as greatly improved and w*as rcdedicated. First Baptist Church
