Wetzel w as employed a s architect and a brick building o f moderate proportions w as planned. The thought w as to provide quarters fo r the young men on the tnird floor. 'Phcrc were many objections to this plan, among the n>os( potent the fact that few young men, not spe­ cially interested, could be induced to cHmh to the third floor to avail themselves of the limited advantages that such quarters wouUI afford them. M atters thus sto<^ uncertain at the laying of the cornerstone of the building, July 5, 1886. General (afterw ard s G overnor) Beaver, a neplicw o f M r. Thom as Beaver, w as present at the laying of the cornerstone. H e w as very prominently connecteil with the Y ou n g Men's Christian .Association movement in the Slate, and very closely identified with the movement for the uplifting and betterment of the young men o f Pennsylvania.
