Luther B . Kline, M .D., father o f Charles S ., w as bom in Rush township, NorthumlwrLmd Co., P a., Dec. 24, 1842. H e resided on the farm o f his father until his eighteenth year, attending the country schools. .After ihat he taught a small school and then took a course in the Sunbury Academy. In the fall o f 1865 he entered Jefferson Medical Col lege. Philadelphia, from which he w as gradu ated in M arch, 1867. T he following A pril he came to Catawissa, where he has gradually built up an extensive practice. In 1870 he married Desdemona, daughter o f J . K. and M ary M . Sharpless. and they became the laren ts o f four children: Charles S ., Grace I-'., and two who died in childhood. Mrs. Kline died in 1904. She was a meml»«r of the Methodist Church, to which D r. Kline attended the public schools o f Catawissa. spent one year in Susquehanna U niversity, attended Dickinson College as a member of the class o f 19 0 1, and in 1903 graduated from I>ickinson I^ w School. He read law in the office o f W. H. R haw n. He w as admitted to the bar in M ay. 1903. W’hilc at college he took a strong interest in ath letics, and w as also prominent in the Phi Della Theta fraternity. H e is a member of the Methodist Church and is connected with several Masonic bodies. On Sept. 7, t9to. M r. Kline graduated from the Bloomsburg State X om iat School in 1895 and for several years w as a successful teacher in the public schools o f Catawissa. She is a mem ber of the Episcopal Church. George Seym ore Gilbert, father o f Mrs. Kline, was bom in Ogdensburg, N. Y ., and died in Catawissa in 19 12 . H e cam e to this Kirt o f Pennsylvania as a surx'cv'or on the inc of the Cataw issa railroad, ano w as made the first station agent at Rupert. H e also carried on a mercantile business. H e w as a mcmlxrr of the Episcopal Church and of the .Masonic fraternity. H is w ife. .Anna Plough man, 'laughter o f John Sharpless, w as a dcsccndani of the Snarplcss fam ily o f Bolton Manor. Leicestershire. England. Harriet Sharidess and her cousin, members o f this Lamily, were noted nurses in the days of the C ivil war. Mr. and M rs. Kline arc also re lated to the H arder fam ily, the ancestors of which came from Haarlem, Holland, and set tled in N ew Y o rk in 16 16 . T hr'je of the H arders fought in the Rex'olulion and two others were practicing physicians in this State in early Colonial times. JO H N R . T O W N S E N D has had so active a part in the various movements which have worked together fo r the promotion of the best interests o f Bloomsburg that the results of his efforts can hardly be estimated at the present lime. His work is recognizetl and appreciated by his fellow citizens, who have bWii encouraged to cooperate in many projects o f importance lo the town because of their confidence in his judgment of their relative value.
