John Ilicster, who purchased large tracts of land near the intersection o f B ig and Little Fishing crccks in 1803. In i8 a j his son-in-law, Joseph Vanderslice, came with his fam ily from Pottstown and settled on this land, building a log house where W. P. Vanderslice now lives. John Hiester V’andcrslicc, son o f Joseph, w as bom in Chester county. Pa., and married Catherine Mclick, a native o f Columbia county, whose fam ily came to this section from New Jersey. M r. and M rs. John H iester Vanderslice arc buried in the Vanderslice graveyard in Hem­ lock township, this county. They were the p a rw ilso f M rs. T acy E (Vanderslice) W hile. Peter White, great-grandfather o f Hicstcr Vanderslice White, settled in Columbia county previous to the year 1800, first in the vicinity o f Orangeville, whence he moved about 1806 (u Scott township, in the ncighlrarhood o f I.ight Street. H e was a farmer, and bought the farm on the edge o f lhal village in recent years owned by the llartm aiis. H e passed the rest of his life there, he and his w ife both dying on that place, and they are buried at Light Street. H is death occurred when he w as comparatively a young nun. and his widow, Elizabeth (B rittain ), survived some twenty years. They had a family o f thirteen children, o f whom wc have the following record: H arry, the last surviving member of the family, w as a farmer, residing in Indiana; Mar)- Maud married a M r. William White, son o f Peter, w as bora in 1803 in what is now Orange township, Co­ lumbia county, and lived with his parents un­ til his nurriage. H e (hen b o ^ h t a farm about a mile north o f Light Street, partly cleared and improved to some extent. A fter about twcnty-nvc years' residence there he imught another farm, adjoining his first pur­ chase. and removing to that p b ce passed the remainder o f his life there, dying Feb. 18, 1879. H e erected new buildings on this prop­ erty. H is holdings comprised fivd farms. Mr. White w as n urried in Columbia county to Jan e Mc.Murtrie, who was bom near Belviderc, in W arren county. N . John M c>furtric White was bom Dec. 30. 1833. in Orange township, Columbia county, was reared there, and remained at home with his parents until over twenty-three years old. .After that he w as occupied for several years in the cultivation o f one of his father's farms, in 1868 buying the farm in Centre township, near Light Street, to which he moved three years later. A t the time he purchased the pbce there w as a tannery in operation there, and he rented the same for several years and then sold it. H is attention during his active years w as given to farming, in which he H*as very successful. H e has held various offices in his township, in politics supporting the Democratic party. H e and his w ife, who now live at Nescopeck. Pa., belong to the Pres­ byterian Church. On Feb. 10, 1857. M r. W hite married Tacy E . A'anderslicc, who was bora in Columbia
