Mr. Teple w as a particularly accomplished history scholar, and a great Bible student, and he took an active part in the w ork of the United Brethren Church, o f which he w as a mem ber. H e liclonged to the P . O. S . o f A ., and in political connection was a Republican. H is death occurred in Franklin township, Colum bia county. A pril I 2, 1903. and he w as buried at M cEntyrc, in Catawissa township. M r. Teplc’s first w ife, Erm ina (D riesbach), was born Oct. 10 ,18 3 9, and died Ju ly 1868, the mother o f two children: Anna E ., born in 1862, who died in 18 6 4; and George W ., bom in 1867, who died in the same year. On M ay 29, 1869, he married (second) M ary A . Hile. who was born Jan . 29, 1845, daugh ter o f Jam es and Hannah (Cam pbell) Hile. She now resides at (/atawissa. Jam es E . Teple, born in Franklin township, Columbia county. Aug. 18, 1875, attended the local schools there during his earlier years and subsc(|ucntly took a course at the Bloomsbuig .Slate Norm al school, graduating in iSoti. H e taught one term at Beaver Valley. Columbia county, and two terms in N orth ampton county, near Easton, and then went to .Maska, where he w as engaged in prospect ing. Following his experience there he was in the Stale o f California for six years, two years o f that time being in T rinity county, employed as a bookkeeper. T h e other four ye,irs he w as in San Francisco, during which he w as special Stale Representative for the Continental Casualu- Company. Returning East .March t. 1906. he was in Bloomsbutg for two months, on M ay 1st o f that year go ing to New Y o rk City, where he became ntanagcr of the Harlem branch of the Con tinental Casualty Company, wilh office at No. 2 17 West 125th street. H e was there four years an<l three months, at the end o f which perio<l he returned to Bloomsburg to devote
all his energies to the interests of the African Ostrich Farm & Feather Company, o f which • he is secretary. H e is winning firm standing among the substantial business men of the town and county. M r. Teple is an independ ent voter. Ilis religious connection is with the Methodist Church. On Ju ly 27, 19 10, M r. Teple married Helen G . M asieller, daughter o f John W. Masiellcr, o f Bloomsburg. and they have had a daugh ter, FJizabeth M . (who died y o u n g ); and a son Edwin Russell, bom Ju n e 20, 19 13 . M rs. Teple is also o f New Je rse y ancestry, being descended from Henry M astcller, who came from tlu t State and located in what is now Sugarloaf township, Columbia Co.. Pa., where he followed fanning. H e lived to the age o f ninety-six years. H is son, George Masteller, w as also a fam icr in Sugarloaf township, where he died. H is children w ere: Kmma (m arried William C ole). W illiam . Thom as, Clarke. Washington and Loyl. William Mastcller, son of George, and grandson o f Henry, w as Ixirn in .Sugarloaf township, and w as engaged as a huckster throughout his active life. H e enlisted in the C ivil war, scr-ing four years in the Union anny. T o him .and his w ife M artha ( F r itz ) were born the following children: P arvin (living at O rangeville), John W .. .Albert, George, W illiam (w ho died young). V erdelia. .Alvenia, A lice and Emma. John W . M astcller w as bora Sept. 28. 18 57 , at Orangeville, Columbia county. During his young ntanhood he entered the employ o f .A. B. Stew art at Orangeville, Pa., for whom he clerked eighteen years, after which he became interested in business on his own account at Bloom sbu^. running a novelty store fo r fo u r teen years. F o r some time he has been in the steel plant of the American C ar & Foundry Company, at Berw ick, where he holds the po sition o f foreman. On Ja n . 1. 1889. he m ar ried Ida Kistlcr, daughter o f Benjam in and Frances (G oho) Kistlcr. and they have three children: Helen CJ.. M rs. Jam es E . T e p le; Ruth, at home: and John. M rs. He is a son of the late W illbm W . B lack, who served two terms as sheriff of the county, and was court crier al the time o f his death.
