Pa., and a pioneer at Bloomsburg. where he developed a large business as a caqicnter and cabinetmaker, dying there at an advanced age. He was married to M ary Jackson, and they had these children: John. M inerva. Sarah. LewHs and Joseph (tw in s), and Susan. Joseph Barkley w as bom in Bloomsburg. A pril 13. 18 14 . and became a cabinetmaker and undertaker. He died March 13 . 1887. H e owmed a large tract o f land, which he cultivated, erected a gristmill on his property, and engaged in milling in connection with fam ung. He lived to the advanced age of ninety years. Bittner w as educated in the puhIk schools o f his native place and assisted his father in the milling business. Later he engaged in the manufacture o f cigars, which he conducted at Bittner’s com er, in (he same township, for a number o f years. Selling his manufacturing business he entered the hotel business at W eatherly, Carbon county, con ducting the "Gilbert House.” H is next move was to Hazleton, where he conducted the "V alle y House” fo r a number o f years. R e tiring from the hotel business he removed to California, and ag.tin entered the cigar manu facturing business, w h kli he is conducting at the present lime. Mr. Bittner was married to Ida Frey, who was torn Nov. 4. 1857, in Low hill township, Lehigh county, daughter o f Peter Frey, a farm er o f that locality, and died .April 19. 1905. She is buried at W eatherly. Pa. They had the following children: Hattie, who mar ried Ernest Twccdlc. residing at Hazleton. P a .; .Archible G .; Thomas V., who married Carrie Buck, residing at Hazleton. P a .: Bar* Iiara, who married Percy Gennyn. residing at Hazleton. H e taught school there for two terms, at ilosensack. H e w as em ployed by the Central Railroad Company o f New Jersey a s clerk at Mountain T op, near W ilkes-Barre, Pa. Resigning this position he came to Berwick and entered the employ of the .American C ar and Foundry Company, as assistant fiaymastcr.
