T his fam ily was rcare<l in the faith of the Roman Catholic Q iurcli. John McConnell, grandfather o f George AfcConncll, w as a native o f Ireland. He was engaged as a clerk in Ihe Canadian civil serv­ ice, holding government positions practically all his life. H is w ife was Elizabeth Henncssy. G e o ^ c NfcConnclI obtained an excellent education in Toronto, and after leaving school became employed with his father, with whom he was associated nine years. H e then spent some time in N ew Y o rk and Pliiladelphi.'i, en­ gaged in mercantile pursuits. H e is now gen­ eral manager of the 300-acre c.statc o f Frank E . De Long, at Washingtonville, Montour county (where he has been engaged siiKC 1908), one of the most beautiful country places in this region, which umlcr his carc is undergoing a process o f modern development calculated to expand its possibilities to ,'in e x ­ tent which could only l>e attempted with modem resources. M r. McConnell has not allied him self to any political party. H e is devoted to business, and has been very succes.sful in his present position. On Ju ly 9, 1908. M r. McConnell married 5 ra E . V O U G H T . a fam ier o f Fran k­ lin township, Columbia county, was bom in .Montour county, Aug. 8, 18 32, son o f John V'oiighl, J r . John Vought, S r., the grandfather, w as bom in New Jerse y, and coming to Pennsylvania bought a farm on R ig R oaring creek. H e m ar­ ried Hannah Metz, and thcir children w ere: D an iel; H o w ell; Ja m e s; John, J r .; Anna, who married Peter Bodine; Elizabeth, who m ar­ ried John H offm an; and M ary, who married J . V,astinc. Jo h n Vought’s remains were laid to rest in the I.uthcran Church cemetery at Sharp Ridge. John Vought, J r ., married Esther Knittle,

o f Franklin township, and they had two chil­ dren. Simon and Peter H . Throughout his useful life John Vought w as a farm er, oper­ ating in Montour county. H e scn 'cd as a school director and also as poor supervisor, and personally w as a most excellent man. Peter II. Vought remained at home until he w as twenty years o f age. at which time he bought fifty acres o f land in Franklin town­ ship, Columbia county. With this small begin­ ning he commenced farm ing, steadily adding to his holdings until he now owns t,200 acres, all in Franklin township, which he devotes to general fam iing and fruit raising. H e is one of the heaviest landowners in the township. Peter H . Vought marric<l Esther Knittle, but no children were bom to them. M rs. Vought died about 1900 and is buried in the Sharp Ridge Lutheran Church yard. Mr. Vought w as a school director at one time and also served as poor supcr’i.«ior, elected to Iioth offices upon the Democratic ticket. H is suc­ cess in life has been fairly earned by hard work and unceasing economy, and he is nat­ urally held in high respect by all who know him. L U T H E R E Y E R . vice president of the F irst National Bank o f Catawissa, w as bom March 12, 1R46, son o f Rev. W illiam J . Eyer. pastor of the Lutheran congregation at C at­ aw issa from 1838 to 1874. when death cut short a career o f religious and physical activ­ ity in the intere.sts o f his fellow men. H is w ife followed him to the grave in 1876, and they rest side by side in the ccm eteiy at C at­ awissa. Rev. William J . E y e r w as bom Jan . 4 .18 0 3 , in Lebanon county, P a., cante to Columbia county at the .age o f thirty-four, and settled in Catawissa in 1838. H is education was obtained in the city o f N ew Y o rk, where he W'as long under the instruction o f R e v . M r. Gciscnhammcr, and before coming to this sec­ tion to (ake charge of the congregations at Catawissa, Bloomsburg and Roaringcreek had served a congregation at Rhinebeck, N .
