SMiTit, eldest son o f Frederick B . Smith, was born in Tcnnstadt, S.axony, Pru-ssia, Sept. to, 1863. and came to .America at the age o f eight avith his mother and sis­ ter. The foundations o f his education were laid in the German schools and the public schools o f Catawissa. and later he studied in the State Nornval School at Bloomslnirg. lie then entered the marble works o f his father, with whom he remained until 19 0 1. when he went lo Allegheny City to take the foremanship o f granite works there. Returning to Catawissa he %vas in business with his father until 1909, when he was appointed clerk in the county commissioners' office, which posi­ tion he now holds. H e Is a supporter of the policies of the Democratic party, and a incinbcr of the Knights of the Golden blagle and of the Odd Fellows, o f which latter he is a past grand. H e is ,al.so a director in the Cat­ awissa Bank. M r. Smith w as united in m ar­ riage, Ju ly 8. 1902, to Qtristina, daughter of Judge J . T . F o x. o f Catawissa, and they have one child. From boyhood he took an interest in the stonecutting trade, and after le a m i^ the business thoroughly becante a la rtn cr with his father. H e makes his home in Bloomsburg, and is one o f llie rising young men of the bor­ ough, liaving the resj>ect o f all who know him. Pike and Luzcm c counties, in 1791 buying the large tract long known as "D rin ker's Beech,’* a name suggested by the large number o f beech trees thereon The Drinker fam ily has been in .America from early Colonial days, and Edivard R . Drinker wa.s of the ninth genera­ tion from the immigrant ancestor, Philip Drinker. ( I ) Philip Drinker, bom in 1596, came to N ew England in 1635 from Exeter, England, in the sliip ’’.Abigail.’ Robert H ackwell, mas­ ter, bringing his w ife and two children. T h cir ages at the time o f embarking were recorded: Philip Drinker, thirty-nine; w ife, Elizabeth, thirty-tw o; sons Edw ard, thirteen, and John, eight years. They settled at Charlestown. M ass. H is death occurred Ju n e 3 3 ,16 4 7 . Mr. Drinker became a man o f some note, e i^ g i n g in the pottery business, and also kept the lirst feriy- over the Mystic river in 1640. Ed«-ard (w ho died 1700) and John appear to have been the only children. ( I I ) John Drinker, younger son o f Philip, bom in 1627, married Elizabeth ■ and they had children: John, Elizabeth, Mara*. Sarah and Philip. ( H I ) John Drinker, son o f John, bom March 3 1 . 1653, at Beverly, Mass.. was a sJiip builder or carpenter. H e married Ruth Balch, and thcir children w ere: Joscph, Kdi'ard and John. ( I V ) Joseph Drinker, son o f John and Ruth. m.arri<M Mar' Janncy, by whom he had the following fam ily: H enry, Jo scfJi, John and Tabiiha. ( V ) Henry Drinker, son o f Josepli, bom in 17 1^ . married in 17 3 1 M ary Golltcr, and died in 1746. T heir children w ere: John. Henry, Daniel, Joscph and Elizabeth. ( V I ) John Drinker, son o f Henry, w as bom in 1733. and died Ju ly 27, i8co. H e was a man o f literary tastes, and also did some news­ paper work. On Feb. 27, 1756 . he married Rachel Rcym ear, who was bom C)ct. 18, 1730, and died M ay 2 1. 1822. They had a fam ily of six children: Henry, Joscph (bom 1758. died 17 5 9 ), Ilannah, .Ann, Joseph D . and Mary. ( V H ) Henry Drinker, J r ., son o f lohn and Rachel, was l« m Jan . 22, 1757. in l*hil.adclphia. where he resided all his life, dying there Oct. 19. 1822.
