M arks Graham was only a boy when he came with his parents to America. H e found his first cmploN'ment in the iron mill at Dan­ ville, and was engaged in such work for fif­ teen years at tlu t place, after which he joined his father in Madison township, taking charge o f (he lattcr's f.arm. A fte r his father's death he acquired the ownership of the homestead, which he still owns, a tract of two hundred acres o f valuable land. He lived there until he removed to Bloomsburg, and made the reputa­ tion o f being one of the most progressive busi­ ness farm ers in his locality, his energy coupled with commendable enterprise bringing him un­ usually good results in his agricultural opera­ tions. 1Ie also owns two fine farm s in Mon­ tour county, each containing two hundred acres, one in .Anthony townshm (the old Jon as Smith place) and one in D erry town­ ship (the old Edw ard Dicffcnbauch place). M r. Graham has not limited his interests to farming. H e w as one of the organizers of the Farm ers’ National Bank, Exchange, Mon­ tour county, and became a member o f its board o f directors, and he is a stockholder in the Bloomsburg Brick Company. In 1907 Mr. Graham moved to Bloomsburg, where he has since resided, his home hcing on E ast Third street, near E ast street. H e is a memlKr of the Catholic Church, and in his political prefer­ ences is a Democrat. M r. Graham w as married lo M ary Garvey, who w as bom in Ireland, and died in May, n)o8. She is buried at Bloomsburg. T w o children were bom to them: John, a grad­ uate of the Bloomsbui^ State Normal school and o f Villanova College, Villanova, P a., class o f 1 9 1 2 : and Patrick, who attended high school at Bloomsburg. and since 19 12 has been a student at Villanova Collide. D.. has been engaged in the practice o f medicine at Bloomsburg since 1904, and meantime has become associated with a number o f important business enterprises in that town and the

vicinity. H is professional work and other in­ terests have brought him in contact with an unusually large proportion o f his fellow citi­ zens, and he is highly esteemed by all who know him. Dr. .Altmiller is of Gcm ian extrac­ tion, his father and grandfather having been natives o f Gennany, from which countiy the latter, John C . .Altmiller, brought his fam ily to America in 1857. H e settled at llazlcton, Luzerne Co., P a., where he died A pril 2, 1886. H e was a music teacher Iw profession. Charles Altmiller, the Doctor’s father, was thirteen years old when he came lo this country with the rest of the family. H e continued his studies in the public schools o f Hazleton, and for a mimber o f years after beginning life on his own account w as engaged in the mer­ cantile business. lie served three years dur­ ing the Civil w ar, being a bugler. F o r over twenty years he has liccn prominent in the ad ­ ministration o f public affairs at Hazleton. In 1891 he l)cc.amc the first city treasurer of that place, filling the office for a terra o f three years, and from 1896 to the present time he has liccn a member of the city board of as­ sessors. Politically he is a Democrat. On Aug. 12, 1866, he married Christine Haitter, also a native o f G crnunv, born Sept. 12 ,18 3 0 , daughter o f Jacob and Barbara (.Schweitzer) Baittcr. Altm iller was liom at llazlcton Ju ly 4, 1877, and received the foundation o f nis literary education at public school there. He then entered Temple College, at Phila­ delphia. and after graduating from that institu­ tion matriculated at the Medico-Chirurgical College, in the same city, from which he was grailu.atcd in 1901 with the degree o f M . D. F o r the next two years he w as associated in practice with Dr. Longshore, at Hazleton, after which he became examining physician at the Medico-Chirurgical C o llie, remaining there for a year in that capacity. Then he spent six months in 1904 studying abroad, at Berlin and London, specializing in diseases of the stonuch and intestines. In 1904 he came to Bloomsburg, where he has since prac­ ticed. .and he has attained high prestige among his fellow practitioners, as well as popularity with .a wide circle o f patients. H e is a promi­ nent member of the Columbia County Medical 5 i c t y, o f which he w as president in 1 9 1 1, ^ and also belongs to the Pennsylvania Slate Medical Society.
