The second important work of Manoel da Assumpcaé which deserves mention as being perhaps the first grammar and dictionary in the Bengali language Vocabulario em Idioma Bengallae Portu gues: first Beugali feygal/a e Portuguez* diridido em grammar and diction- ; ন ary, 1743. du:s partes, published at Lisbon in is entitled Voeshbulario em Idioma 1743. ‘This book is not easily avail- able here but it is mentioned in the Catalogue of the British Museum, and Grierson, in his Lavguistie Survey * has given a short account of this notable work. In the first forty pages of the Vocuhu/ario, is given a compendium of Bengali grammar: the ~est of the book being divided into two parts, viz., vocabulary, Bengali-Portuguese, pp. 47-306 and Portuguese-Bengali, pp. 307-577. Like the last mentioned work, Ca/Aecismo, it is written throughout in Roman character, the words again being spelt aceording to the rules of Portuguese pronunciation
