Akbar directed a messenger to be sent to Kalij Khan in order to despatch him speedily to Surat, so as to secure the departure of the vessel. . . . Kalij Khan was accordingly sent to Surat to despatch the ships. He went along with Kalyan Rai, a merchant, and having obtained the passes from the Europeans, he sent off the ships and quickly returned and waited upon his Majesty while he was in Malwa.' EUROPEANS UNDER JAHANGIR's REIGN A number of references to the position of Europeans in India during the reign of the Great Moghul emperor Jahangir (1605 - 1628 A. D.) have been made in the fourth volume of the present series, especially in con- nection with Hawkins and Sir Thomas Eoe. There are several references in Jahangir 's own Memoirs to the Europeans, Portuguese and English, which are worth recording. The first relates to outrages committed by the Europeans at Goa upon native ships trading at Surat. Jahangir writes the following in an entry under the eighth year of his reign, 1022 A. H. (1613 A. D.): [Elliot, vol. vi, p. 337.] ' News arrived that the Eu- ropeans in Goa, in defiance of their engagements, had plundered four ships engaged in the foreign trade of the port of Surat; and having made a great many Moham-
