After this transaction, the Sultan gave a loose to all the extravagance of his tyranny, and massacred without scruple, and without provocation, the first persons of the land. I have already remarked, that fear, and not love, is the source of the political as well as the religious creed of the Javanese ; and the respect still shown to the memory of this monster is a signal proof of it, for his tomb at Tagal is not considered as less than the shrine of a saint, and often receives the pious visits and oblations of thp present race of inhabitants !
