In a tavern a peasant reads a news-sheet which he holds in his left hand. His pipe is in his right hand, which rests on his knee. On the table are a glass of beer and a piece of tobacco. The upper corners of the picture are rounded off. Signed in full in the upper right-hand corner j 9^ inches by 8 inches. Sale. A stout old man, with his head bare, leans back on his bench to drain a large glass of beer, to the astonishment of another man who stretches out his arms and waves his cap. At the hearth, to the right, sits a third man, with his felt hat pushed over his ear. He is jesting at the corpulence of the hostess, who stands holding a pewter pot. On the ground is a dog.
