In an arm-chair in the foreground sits a sick woman ; the physician feels her pulse and whispers to a man standing behind the chair. Signed "G. A young woman, wearing a red dress with white sleeves and a white cap, holds under her left arm a tub of herrings, one of which she offers to an old woman who leans on a stick. On a bench to the right is an earthenware jug. In the back- ground is a vine-clad cottage, with a view of a landscape to the right. The figures are three-quarter length. This is a very fine and characteristic work. " A most satisfactory example of the master " (Sm.). Signed in full on the door-post j panel, 1 8 inches by 1 6 inches.
