A view down a slope to the sea, in the distance to the left. At the foot of a steep hill, on the right, are a man and two cows, one of which is lying down. To the left are a donkey and other figures. Blue sky, with clouds. Canvas, 39 inches by 51 inches (or, 39 inches by 49! inches, accord- ing to the 1879 catalogue). Exhibited at the Royal Academy Winter Exhibition, London, 1879, No. 90, and 1903, No. 79. Then in the collection of Earl Cadogan. Landscape with Cattle. On rising ground near a river- bank are seven cows, one of which is standing up. On the opposite bank are a tower and other buildings. Blue sky, with clouds. A landscape with a hilly foreground. In front of a bushy hedge, to the right, are five sheep ; on the other side sits the shepherdess, wearing a red jacket and a straw hat and holding a crook. Beside her lies a dog. Behind her are two other sheep. In the distance is a walled town. The shepherdess is probably a portrait. " Painted in the artist's smooth or finished manner " (Sm.).
