At a table in the centre, a peasant, seen from the back in a three-quarter view, sits in a three-legged arm-chair. He stretches out his right hand on the table ; his left arm rests on the arm of the chair. He watches a peasant, seated behind the table, who looks into an empty jug lying on the table. A third man stands at the back. By the fireside to the left, in shadow, is a woman in profile to the left. To the right of her is a dog ; behind her are two or three children. In the right foreground is an overturned bench, with a cask behind it. Still very early in style, in respect of the execution. A man takes a woman by the shoulders ; another man climbs a ladder to a hatchway. In a fine bluish-grey tone.
