In the left foreground are cottages, in front of which a cow is lying down while another cow grazes. Sunlight. Signed, P. Potter, and dated 1646 ; panel, 1 8 inches by 24^ inches. A bull, five cows, a ram, and a sheep. In the right middle distance is part of a farm, with a great tree at the farther end of it. To the right is a row of pollard willows. A reddish- brown bull with a white face lies in the right foreground, in profile to the left ; behind it to the right is a sheep, seen from the back. In the centre, farther away, a yellow cow and a whitish-yellow cow lie side by side j the yellow cow is in profile to the left, and the other is seen in a foreshortened view with its head to the front. Behind them stands a grey cow in profile to the right. To the right stands the fourth cow, seen in a three-quarter view with its head turned away to the left ; a woman milks her. In the extreme left foreground, near a fence, is a ram. In the middle distance a sportsman with a gun on his shoulder and a dog walks past the cow being milked. In the distance is a placid stream with bush-grown banks. Early morning. A "very beautiful and perfect specimen of the master" (Sm.).
