A young lady, dressed in red and white silk, sits turned to the left at her toilet-table, which is covered with a Persian carpet. She holds in her left hand an open letter, and in her right a medallion portrait of a man. To the right, behind her chair, stands a man-servant. On the table is a mirror beside a metal box. To the left on the back wall hangs a flower-piece with a gilt frame in the baroque style. Signed in full, and dated 1667 ; panel, 10 inches by 8 inches. In the left foreground the man sits in profile to the right, with his legs crossed j he is reading a letter held in his left hand. On the right the lady stands at a table covered with a Persian carpet ; she washes her hands in a silver basin held by a page standing before her to the right.
