An officer in a cuirass, with his head bare, sits seen in full face at a table covered with a Turkey carpet, on which lie his large plumed hat and writing materials. To the left a trumpeter in high boots, with his trumpet on his back, waits, hat in hand. Beside him stands a dog. In the right side-wall is the chimney- piece. At the back is a bed. On the floor in front lie a letter and a broken pipe. Signed with the monogram ; canvas, 22 inches by 17 inches. A replica on canvas, 29^ inches by 24 inches was in the collection of Baron Konigswarter, Vienna, but did not occur in the sale of November 20, 1906. In this replica the dog and the letter on the floor were omitted; a stick lying on the table was added, and the table-cover was smooth and without any pattern.
