A young lady is having her hair dressed by a maid, with the advice of an elderly woman. Another maid, who is leaving the room, turns her head to the woman speaking. The pleasant expression of the figures and the excellent technique entitle this picture to be regarded as a good work of the master, although it does not belong to his last and finest period. A lady, wearing a white satin bodice and a red skirt, sits with her back to the spectator. Her right arm is over the back of her chair, and her left arm rests in her lap. Beside her is a table with a cover. Beyond the table stands a young woman carrying a silver salver and a ewer. On the right is an old projecting chimney-piece.
