ON RECEIVING HIS LETTER

AT night beneath the solemn stars I stood
And watched the spacious loveliness, but yet
Life's struggle and defeat could not forget,
To-morrow's terrors trembled in my blood!

One came and said "Receive into thine heart
Vast starry courage from the heavens above;
In this great universe whose law is love
Whose end is victory, thou hast thy part."
