In 1916-17, the imports o! merchandise increased in value by 18 per cent over the previous year and the exlx)rts by 91 per cent, the figures being for the first time greater than th? average for the last five years o! peace. The 'increase over peace time is due to higher prices, however, as the want of ship? has considerably reduced the gross quantities o! produce entering and leaving the country. The volume contains the usual illuminating diagrams of a popular character; and very interesting and useful sum- mary descriptions of the co?rse of trade in the principal commodltles such as imports o! cotton goods, the exports o! hides, raw cotton, ell seeds and coal. At the end the movements of gold and silver coin and ballion are dealt with, and tl?ere is a useful explanation o! a tabular state- ment of the balance of trsde.
