Adams, Samuel, LLD., 1722-1803 An eminent American patriot and states- man John Adams says of him, " ITor fifty years his pen, his tongue, his activ- ity, were constantly exerted for his country without fee or reward. During that time he was almost an incessant writer," His biographer, Mr. Wells, says, " How many signatures he adopted during the long period between the com- mencement of the revenue system and the Declaration of Independence, it is impossible to say. Twenty-five have been collected, of his use of which there is absolute proof . . . Some of his essays over one signature extend, in consecutive series, through several years . . . wliile with different names he kept up con- tests simultaneously with the Crown writers on different subjects . . .
