WORD-LIST.
Notes.—In preparing the following list it has been thought best to avoid any confusion which might arise from unfamiliar spellings, by presenting words still current in their current Siamese forms; though where the difference is considerable or the identification is at all doubtful, the form in the text has been preserved, and the modern equivalent has been added in brackets. Words no longer current either in Siamese or in Lao are marked obsolete. Those found only in the northern dialect are marked Lao. No attempt has been made to isolate elements common to Shan and Thai, nor the inherited Chinese element. For revision of doubtful etymologies I am specially indebted to Dr. O. Frankfurter of the National Library.
I. Words recognized as of foreign origin.
A. From the Sanskrit or Pali:—
กฐิน กุฎี เจดีย์ ชล ไตรปิฎก ตรี เถร เทวดา ธรรม ธาตุ ธาร บาล บูชา บริวาร ปราชญ์ ปราสาท พำ (for พรรณ์?) พาทย์ พิณ พิหาร (วิหาร) พุทธ เพชร์บูรี พล พระ มโนสิลาบาตร มหา มาศ ยัติ์ รัตน ราชบูรี ราม รูจาศรี สถาปก สัทธา สมุท สังฆราช สาสนา ศรี สรีดพงศ ศรีธรรมราช ศรีสัชนาไลย สีล สุโขไทย ศก หงษาวดี อัฎฐารศ เนก (for อเนก?) อรัญญิก อาจารย์ อินทราทิตย อุบาศก (51). B. From the Cambodian:— กระพัง กระพัด (for สะพัด) จาฤก ทรง นาง บำเริอ บงคํ (?) (7). Also the following effectively naturalized:—ทเล ปราบ เสมอ สร้าง หาญ อาจ (6).
C. Proper names not recognized as native, and not included under A. or B. above:— กาว a people กุญ ขพุง a demon โขง the river ชวา มา a people มแม มโรง ลุํมบาจาย สคา อู the river (11).
