Chief Secretary Jn the Philp Ministry, and appointed Minister for Defence in the first Commonwealth Ministry in January 1901. Died shortly after taking federal office. He went to England in 1900 as Queensland delegate to watch the progress of the Commonwealth Constitution Bill through tt» Imperial Parliament.
>OUO£A8, Hon. Sir Adye, Knt. (1815-1906), Premier of Tasmania, axi sometime President of the Legislative Council of the colony. He was born at Thorpe, near Norwich, England, in 1815, and came in 18S8 to Tas- mania, where he was admitted as a legal practitioner, and at the time of his death was the senior member of the Tasmanian bar. He was Premier and Chief Secretary of the colony from August-1884 to March 1886. Agent- General in England during 1886-7, and President of the Legislative Coun- cil from April 1834 to May 1904. The inclusion of Tasmania in the Aus- tralian federation was largely due to his strenuous advocacy of the move- ment. (Seo Jo Notable Australian* 1st ed.) Died 10th April 1906-
BOUG&A8, Hon. John, C.M.G. (1828-1904), Queensland legislator and public official, was born in Liondon, 6th March 1828, educated at Rugby and Durham University, and came to New South Wales in 1851. He pat in the N.S.W. Parliament for Darling Downs, and settling in Queensland in 1863. entered the Legislative Assembly of that colony for Port Curtis. Ho was sometime Postmaster-General and Treasurer, Agent-General for the colony from 1869 to 1871, Premier from 1877 to 1879, Government Resident at Thursday Island In 1885, three years Special Commissioner for British New Guinea, and Government Resident at Thursday Island from 1889 until his death.
DOWUVO, James Sheen (1S19-1902), District Court Judge of New South Wales, was born in London, 2nd Dec 1819, eldest son of the late Sir James Dowlirg, sometime Chief Justice of that colony. He was called to the bar at the Inner Temple in 1848, and was District Court Judge ia N.S.W. for about SO years.
DllTBT, Albert Victor, I.S.O. <1 83 8-1907), Queensland public official, was born at Brussels, 28th August 1838, and in 1762 was appointed to a position in the Colonial Secretary's office at Brisbane. He was in the Queensland public service for forty-two years, and acted as Clerk of the Executive Council under every ministry up to the Morgan Administration, and as Private Secretary to nearly all the Governors of Queensland. (See John*** Notable Australian* 1906.) Died 6th Sept 1907.
DUPTT, Hon. Sir Charles Gavan, K.C.M.G. (1816-1903), Irish national- ist, Australian statesman, and man of letters. Born in County Monoghan, Ireland, 12th April 1816, and was one of the founders of The Nation news- paper at Dublin in 1842. With O'Connell and others he was tried for sedition and convicted, but the conviction was set aside by the House of Lords. He was a leader of the Irish Confederation in 1846, and later with Martin, Mitchell, and O'Doherty, was indicted for treason felony in con- nection with the Smith O'Brien schemes, but although arraigned on four separate bills, it was found impracticable to secure a conviction against him. He was one of the promoters of the Irish Tenant League, and Inde- pendent Irish party, and elected to the House of Commons for New Ross, sat until 1865, and then came to Victoria. Here he was received with great enthusiasm, and was returned to the first Parliament for Villlers and Heytesbury, and was a member of the second Ministry under respon- sible government.
