The character of the work suggested by the representative journalist harmonized in part with the course which the Chief Justice had recommended. After mature deliberation, the student resolved immediately to set about its accomplishment, through an argument which should combine a review of the legal status of civil rights, and an exposure of the unconstitutionality of those adjudications which had laid the foundation for caste in America by their interpretations of the Fourteenth Amendment. The result of his labor in carrying out this resolution is the following argument, which presents the foreign student's review of the constitutional status of the civil rights of African citizens. It begins in the following chapter.
