Rebekah beareth Eſau and Jacob.
CHAP. XXVI.
Iſaac goeth to Gerar:

Before
CHRIST
1822.

Before
CHRIST
1837.

Iſhmael, Abraham's ſon, [1] whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham:

13cir. 1800. And [2] theſe are the names of the ſons of Iſhmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firſtborn of Iſhmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibſam,

14 And Miſhma, and Dumah, and Maſſa,

15‖ Or, Hadad, 1 Chron. 1. 30. Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphiſh, and Kedemah:

16 Theſe are the ſons of Iſhmael, and theſe are their names, by their towns, and by their caſtles; [3] twelve princes according to their nations.

171773. And theſe are the years of the life of Iſhmael, an hundred and thirty and ſeven years: and [4] he gave up the ghoſt and died; and was gathered unto his people.

18 [5] And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goeſt toward Aſſyria: and he †† Heb. fell, Pſ. 78. 64. died [6] in the preſence of all his brethren.

19 ¶ And theſe are the generations of Iſaac, Abraham's ſon: [7] Abraham begat Iſaac:

201857. And Iſaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, [8] the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padan-aram, [9] the ſiſter to Laban the Syrian.

211838. ¶ And Iſaac intreated the LORD for his wife, becauſe ſhe was barren: [10] and the LORD was intreated of him, and [11] Rebekah his wife conceived.

22 And the children ſtruggled together within her; and ſhe ſaid, If it be ſo, why am I thus? [12] And ſhe went to enquire of the LORD.

23 And the LORD ſaid unto her, [13] Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people ſhall be ſeparated from thy bowels; and [14] the one people ſhall be ſtronger than the other people; and [15] the elder ſhall ſerve the younger.

24 ¶ And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25 And the firſt came out red, [16] all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Eſau.

261837. And after that came his brother out, and [17] his hand took hold on Eſau's heel; and [18] his name was called Jacob: and Iſaac was threeſcore years old when ſhe bare them.

27 ¶ And the boys grew: and Eſau was [19] a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was [20] a plain man, [21] dwelling in tents.

28 And Iſaac loved Eſau, becauſe †† Heb. veniſon was in his mouth. he did [22] eat of his veniſon: [23] but Rebekah loved Jacob.

29 ¶ And Jacob ſod pottage: and Eſau came from the field, and he was faint:

30 And Eſau ſaid to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, †† Heb. with that red, with that red pottage. with that ſame red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called ‖‖ That is, red. Edom.

31 And Jacob ſaid, Sell me this day thy birthright.

32cir. 1805. And Eſau ſaid, Behold, I am† Heb. going to die. at the point to die: and what profit ſhall this birthright do to me?

33 And Jacob ſaid, Swear to me this day; and he ſware unto him: and [24] he ſold his birthright unto Jacob.

34 Then Jacob gave Eſau bread and pottage of lentiles; and [25] he did eat and drink, and roſe up, and went his way: thus Eſau deſpiſed his birthright.

CHAP. XXVI.

1 Iſaac becauſe of famine goeth to Gerar. 2 God inſtructieth and bleſſeth him. 6 He denieth his wife, and is reproved by Abimelech. 12 He growetb rich, and the Philiſtines envy him. 18 He digged ſundry wells. 23 God appeared to him in Beer-ſheba, and bleſſeth him. 26 Abimelech maketh a covenant with him there. 34 Eſau's Canaanitiſh wives are a grief to his parents.

cir. 1804.And there was a famine in the land, beſide [26] the firſt famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Iſaac went unto [27] Abimelech king of the Philiſtines unto Gerar.

2 ¶ And the LORD appeared unto him, and ſaid, Go not down into Egypt; dwell [28] in the land which I ſhall tell thee of:

3 [29] Sojourn in this land, and [30] I will be with thee, and [31] will bleſs thee; for unto thee, and unto thy ſeed, [32] I will give all theſe countries, and I will perform [33] the oath which I ſware unto Abraham thy father;

4 And [34] I will make thy ſeed to multiply as the ſtars of heaven, and will give unto thy ſeed all theſe countries; [35] and in thy ſeed ſhall all the nations of the earth be bleſſed;

5 [36] Becauſe that Abraham obeyed my voice, and kept my charge, my commandments, my ſtatutes, and my laws.

6 ¶ And Iſaac dwelt in Gerar:

7 And the men of the place aſked him of his wife; and [37] he ſaid, She is my ſiſter: for [38] he feared to ſay, She is my wife; leſt, ſaid he, the men of the place ſhould kill me for Rebekah; becauſe ſhe [39] was fair to look upon.

8 And it came to paſs, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philiſtines looked out at a window, and ſaw, and, behold, Iſaac was ſporting with Rebekah his wife.
