PSAL. XIV.

1 David describeth the general corruption of mankind. 7 He wisheth to see the salvation of God.

To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.

THE fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

2 The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.

3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become †† Heb. stinking. filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

4 Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord.

5 There †† Heb. they feared a fear. were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.

6 Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge.

7† Heb. Who will give, &c. Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

The proper character of a citizen of Zion.

A Psalm of David.

LORD, who shall †† Heb. sojourn. abide in thy tabernacle? who shall dwell in thy holy hill?

2 He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness, and speaketh the truth in his heart.

3 He that backbiteth not with his tongue, nor doeth evil to his neighbour, nor ‖‖ Or, receiveth, or, endureth. taketh up a reproach against his neighbour.

4 In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the Lord. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.

5 He that putteth not out his money to usury, nor taketh reward against the innocent. He that doeth these things shall never be moved.

PSAL. XVI.

David fleeth to God for preservation, disclaiming all merit, and professing hatred of idolatry: 5 he rejoiceth in having God for his portion: 8 he confideth in God's present protection, and in a future resurrection, and life everlasting.

‖ Or, A golden Psalm of David. Michtam of David.

PReserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.

2 O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my Lord: my goodness extendeth not to thee;

3 But to the saints that are in the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

4 Their sorrows shall be multiplied that‖ Or, give gifts to another. hasten after another god: their drink offerings of blood will I not offer, nor take up their names into my lips.

5 The Lord is the portion †† Heb. of my part. of mine inheritance and of my cup: thou maintainest my lot.

6 The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

7 I will bless the Lord, who hath given me counsel: my reins also instruct me in the night seasons.

8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.

9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall †† Heb. dwell confidently. rest in hope.

10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

PSAL. XVII.

David appealeth to God for his innocence, and prayeth to be saved from his enemies: 10 he sheweth their pride and eagerness to ruin him: 13 he prayeth against worldly men, expressing his own confidence in God.

A Prayer of David.

HEAR †† Heb. justice. the right, O Lord, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth† Heb. without lips of deceit. not out of feigned lips.

2 Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.

3 Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

4 Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

5 Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps †† Heb. be not moved. slip not.

6 I have called upon thee, for thou
