PSALMS.
David's zealous care for the ark.

PSAL. CXXVII.

1 The vanity of human endeavours without God's blessing. 3 Children are God's good gift.

A Song of degrees ‖‖ Or, of Solomon. for Solomon.

EXcept the Lord build the house, they labour in vain †† Heb. are builders of it in it. that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.

2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.

3 Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

4 As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.

5 Happy is the man that †† Heb. hath filled his quiver with them. hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they ‖‖ Or, shall subdue, as Ps. 18.47. or, destroy. shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

PSAL. CXXVIII.

The sundry blessings which follow them that fear God.

A Song of degrees.

BLessed is every one that feareth the Lord; that walketh in his ways.

2 For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.

3 Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

4 Behold, that thus shall the man be blessed that feareth the Lord.

5 The Lord shall bless thee out of Zion: and thou shalt see the good of Jerusalem all the days of thy life.

6 Yea, thou shalt see thy children's children, and peace upon Israel.

PSAL. CXXIX.

1 God's goodness in saving Israel out of their great afflictions. 5 A prayer against the enemies of the church.

A Song of degrees.

MANY ‖‖ Or, much. a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:

2 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.

3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

4 The Lord is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.

5 Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion.

6 Let them be as the grass upon the housetops, which withereth afore it groweth up:

7 Wherewith the mower filleth not his hand; nor he that bindeth sheaves his bosom.

8 Neither do they which go by say, The blessing of the Lord be upon you: we bless you in the name of the Lord.

PSAL. CXXX.

1 The psalmist in distress prayeth to God, trusting in his mercy for pardon: 5 his own patience in hope: 7 he exhorteth Israel to hope in God.

A Song of degrees.

OUT of the depths have I cried unto thee, O Lord.

2 Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications.

3 If thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities, O Lord, who shall stand?

4 But there is forgiveness with thee, that thou mayest be feared.

5 I wait for the Lord, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope.

6 My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: ‖‖ Or, which watch unto the morning. I say, more than they that watch for the morning.

7 Let Israel hope in the Lord: for with the Lord there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.

8 And he shall redeem Israel from all his iniquities.

PSAL. CXXXI.

1 David professing his humility, 3 exhorteth Israel to hope in God.

A Song of degrees of David.

LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty: neither do I †† Heb. walk. exercise myself in great matters, or in things too †† Heb. wonderful. high for me.

2 Surely I have behaved and quieted †† Heb. my soul. myself, as a child that is weaned of his mother: my soul is even as a weaned child.

3 Let Israel hope in the Lord† Heb. from now. from henceforth and for ever.

PSAL. CXXXII.

1 David in prayer commendeth unto God his zeal to provide a place for the ark. 8 His prayer at the removing of the ark. 11 God's promises to David.

A Song of degrees.

LORD, remember David, and all his afflictions:

2 How he sware unto the Lord, and vowed unto the mighty God of Jacob;

3 Surely I will not come into the tabernacle of my house, nor go up into my bed;

4 I will not give sleep to mine eyes, or slumber to mine eyelids,

5 Until I find out a place for the Lord, †† Heb. habitations. an habitation for the mighty God of Jacob.
